Server hardware
is a lot different than standard PC hardware. When your personal computer crashes it can be irritating
but doesn't really cost you anything
The average amount of money internet companies lose when their websites go offline is $1,000,000 every hour!
In order to keep the losses as low as possible servers are designed to keep running under any circumstance. This is what we call
"high availability". In order to obtain high availability server administrators implement redundant servers and RAID.
On occasion servers will still go down. This may be due to natural disasters like
fire and earthquakes. In these cases we rely on disaster recovery techniques like tape backups to restore data.
Server+ class focuses on these technologies and gives students a good entry level understanding of how to administer
server computer hardware.
